What is the goal of counseling for self-injury?

The goal of counseling for self-injury isn’t to tell you to just stop. It's to help you find new and healthier ways to cope with the emotional pain you're feeling inside. Think of it as a guide to help you build a new toolkit. We work together to help you understand the "why" behind your behavior, so you can stop living in a cycle of pain and start living a life that is full and rewarding. You can learn to be in control of your emotions rather than having them control you.

What are some ways to stop the urge to self-injure?

The urge to self-injure can feel like an overwhelming wave. The key is to find a way to ride that wave without being swept away by it. We can help you learn to identify your triggers and find new coping skills that can help you when the urge arises. This might include anything from holding a piece of ice to drawing on your skin with a red marker. You can find a way to get through this, and we're here to help you get there.

How can a counselor help me with my emotions?

Self-injury is often a way to cope with overwhelming emotions. It's like a pressure release valve that has become a dangerous habit. Counseling provides a safe space for you to explore your emotions without judgment. We’ll help you understand what's really going on inside and give you a new playbook for responding to your feelings in a healthy way. You can learn to feel your emotions without having to act on them.

What is the difference between self-injury and suicide?

While self-injury and suicide are both serious issues, they are very different. Self-injury is often a way to cope with emotional pain, while suicide is the act of ending one's life. We understand that this is a very sensitive topic, but we want you to know that we can help you with both. If you are having thoughts of self-harm or suicide, please reach out to us. We will be there for you every step of the way.
