What is the goal of counseling for oppositional defiance?

Raising a child with Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) can feel like a constant power struggle, like you're in a tug-of-war that never ends. The goal of counseling isn’t to break your child's will. It’s to help you both find a new way to communicate so you can work together, not against each other. We’ll help you find new tools to manage your child’s behavior and help them develop healthier ways of expressing their independence.

How does counseling help with defiance in a child?

A child's defiance is often a way of communicating that they feel misunderstood or unheard. Counseling helps you and your child find a new way to communicate. We'll help you understand what's driving your child's behavior, and we'll give you a new playbook for responding to their defiance with empathy and compassion. You can find a way to connect with your child and build a more peaceful family life.

What are some common challenges parents face with ODD?

Parents of a child with ODD can feel completely overwhelmed and defeated. You may feel like you’re constantly fighting and nothing you do seems to work. We understand this struggle. We'll provide a safe space for you to process your emotions, find community with other parents who understand, and develop new strategies to help you and your child navigate the world. You are not a helpless passenger; you can get your family back on track.

Can a person with Oppositional Defiance Disorder be cured?

Like many mental health conditions, ODD isn't a disease that can be "cured," but it is a condition that can be successfully managed. The goal is to give a child and their family the tools to build a more peaceful, supportive, and loving environment. We’ll help you find new ways to communicate, and we’ll help your child develop the tools to express their feelings in a healthy way. You can find a new way to live, and we are here to help you get there.
