The Benefits of Supporting Student Athletes with Their Mental Health

Anyone who has ever been a competitive athlete at the collegiate level knows that the student-athlete life is a demanding one.

There are early morning practices, long days of classes, and workouts, along with the pressure to perform on game day.

It can be easy for student-athletes to let their mental health fall by the wayside in favor of their athletic performance.

There are many benefits to supporting their mental health.

Benefit #1 - Improved Performance

When athletes are able to focus on their mental health, it can lead to improved performance. When they feel good mentally, they are more likely to be focused and motivated to perform at their best.

Benefit #2 - Increased Retention Rates

Supporting mental health can also lead to increased retention rates among student-athletes. When athletes feel like they have the support they need, they are more likely to stay in school and continue competing.

Benefit #3 - Healthy Mental Environment

Creating a healthy mental environment for student-athletes can also lead to increased success for the team as a whole. When athletes feel like they are part of a supportive community, they are more likely to buy into the team's goals and work together to achieve them.

The Mountain Lion Strong program is an excellent example of how universities can support the mental health of their student-athletes. By providing resources and education on how to maintain a healthy mind, UCCS is setting its athletes up for success both on and off the field.
