FAQs

FAQs about Family Therapy

How do I know if family counseling is the right step for our family?

If conversations feel more like battles, silence feels heavier than words, or you’re stuck repeating the same arguments—family counseling might be the reset you need. It’s not about blame; it’s about finding new ways to connect, communicate, and heal together.

What happens in family counseling? What do we do when we show up?

Think of it as a guided family meeting—with less chaos and more breakthroughs. Your therapist helps everyone share their perspectives, uncover what’s really going on, and practice healthier ways to talk and listen. It’s teamwork, not therapy homework.

How many family therapy sessions will it take?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Some families feel a shift after a few sessions; others take more time to rebuild trust and patterns. Your therapist will tailor the plan to your family’s goals—progress, not perfection, is what counts.

Is family therapy covered by insurance?

Yes, Overcomers accepts Medicaid and most major insurance plans for family therapy sessions.

Is family therapy available online in Colorado?

Yes, we offer family therapy through teletherapy statewide as well as in person at our Colorado Springs, Aurora, Pueblo, and Fort Collins offices.

Summary
Across hundreds of client reviews, one theme comes through again and again: people feel truly heard here. Clients describe finally finding a therapist who understood them, gaining real tools for anxiety, trauma, and anger management, and walking away from sessions feeling lighter and more hopeful. Many say Overcomers was the first place therapy actually felt like the right fit — a space to be met with warmth, patience, and genuine care on the path to becoming who they're meant to be.

Serena Chalepah, LPCC
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Serena has not only knowledge, but compassion, understanding, guidance to push through whatever obstacles I have faced, and the advice needed to learn new traits or skills. I’ve definitely had a battle of finding a therapist I not only connect with, but someone I’m comfortable sharing some uncomfortable situations with to help move past. She’s been so very patient with me and my life’s ups and downs. I can’t thank her enough for being so genuine! Has been nothing but a great experience!

I have been with overcomers for years as a therapy patient and recently transfered from a different psychiatrist to Shannon Powell. She made the whole process so simple and seamless. I was honestly expecting things to be a lot more difficult but was pleasantly surprised. Thank you for making me feel so heard and understood! 10/10 stars!

Miranda Puente, LSW
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I feel like she listens to everything I have to say in a non-judgemental way. She remains nuetral and provide valid information as necessary and doesnt feed into my delusions, yet help me escape them step by step. When we are speaking i feel she is very attentive and engage in the conversation(s) at hand. I enjoy how relatable she can be on difficult topics. All I have to say about Miranda is GOAT.
