What will the first session be like for me?
Great question! If your intake paperwork is not completed then you and your counselor will spend some time completing this intake paperwork prior to continuing the session.
After this, you and your counselor will begin to get to know each other. One of the strongest predictors of successful therapy is the relationship between the client and the counselor. You will initially discuss what brought you to therapy and maybe some of your goals to start working on during the upcoming sessions.
Do you work with couples?
Yes, absolutely! Kate, David and Margot (3 of our counselors) specialize in couples therapy.
Do you work with children?
Yes, we do! Jenny is our trained Play/Child Therapists. She works with ages 3-9, utilizing play therapy.
Do you keep what happens in therapy sessions confidential?
Legally and ethically all therapists are required to maintain confidentiality with their clients. There are a few exceptions: reporting child abuse, adult dependent abuse, and elderly abuse.
Also, if someone is actively suicidal or homicidal therapists are allowed, and in some cases mandated by law, to act to ensure the safety of clients or others.
Other than those exceptions sessions are confidential.
How many sessions do I need?
The answer to this question is entirely up to you. Therapy is very much dependent on each individual and the goals they are interested in achieving. Some desire short-term goals, which could last anywhere from 6-12 sessions, while others are wanting to accomplish some long-term goals which could last a year or more.
Also, it is most important to note that your journey is up to you and your effort to implement the new tools and behaviors discussed with your counselor and ultimately make the change within that you want to see.
